It’s like sledding on water! Lots of fun, and one of our easiest board sports. When kneeboarding, you kneel on a padded board and your low center of gravity makes it easier to balance than in a standing position like when waterskiing or wake boarding.

We have kneeboards with a specially designed “hook” to hold the tow rope handle while you’re getting started. We’ll take you through the basics, and it’s as simple as starting off on your belly, hanging on to the board as the boat starts moving. Then you’ll slide up into a kneeling position and get comfortable with better control of the board. Once you take the handle in hand, you’ll have more maneuverability to steer and turn across the wake if you’d like. We even see lots of first timers get comfortable enough to try tricks like side-sliding or spinning around!

ZUP™ Board vs Knee Board… What's the difference?

Hilton Head ZUP Board watersports activity
Our preferred "kneeboard" is a ZUP™ Board, however we can make a traditional old-school kneeboard available on request if preferred.

You'll find more similarities between these two watersports boards than differences. We find that most riders prefer a ZUP™ Board, unless they are very experienced kneeboarders. Here's the scoop:

Both a ZUP™ Board and a Knee Board may be ridden while kneeling, but you'll start off by laying flat with your belly on the board.

A ZUP Board is shaped much like a Knee Board, but it is a bit larger both in length and width. Most riders will find the larger size of the board to create more stability underneath them.

As the boat picks up speed, you can scoot up into a kneeling position. Another ZUP advantage are the handles, as you'll see pictured above. This can make it easier to grab hold of the board and boost yourself up into the kneeling position. Think of this process like doing a push-up, and sliding your knees forward under your chest.

Once in the kneeling position, you can continue hanging onto the ZUP handles. As you get comfortable, you can let go, and if you'd like, you can grab hold of the tow rope by it's handle, separating it from the board. This will give you much more control while steering the board.

But here is where the ZUP and Knee Board are more different.

Thanks to the ZUP's larger size and stability, you can even switch to a standing position. You can face forward, as if you were on water ski's, or you can ride in a sideways stance like you would a wakeboard. (Snowboarders and street skaters would probably find this most natural.)

Try this on a kneeboard and you'll probably not see great results.

For this reason, we find the ZUP to be more versatile than a kneeboard for most riders, especially inexperienced ones.

A kneeboard adds a wide velcro strap that can be wrapped over your thighs to connect you more securely against the board.

For experienced kneeboard riders who prefer to ride in a traditional kneeling position and want to spend more time carving turns, crossing and jumping the wake, a traditional kneeboard might be preferred. You're more likely to bounce off the ZUP if you did these things, but the connecting strap of the kneeboard makes them more successful.

If you'd prefer a traditional kneeboard just let us know when making your reservation so we can make sure to have the equipment available for your trip.

Live Oac is Hilton Head's original ZUP® Boarding provider and one of the first in the country. What's ZUP? It's an amazing board which can be ridden just like a kneeboard and has some added features and qualities that are great for a first timer. It’s our recommended board for kneeboarding. Please contact us in advance if you'd prefer an "old-school kneeboard" instead of the ZUP and we can make sure to have it on board for your trip.

In most cases, we recommend our 1½ ʜʀ "Board 'N Tube" charter if you have an interested in kneeboarding / ZUP Boarding. Other length trips are available on request, and we can combine other Advanced Watersports for those that wish.
  •   1½ HOURS
The 1½ hour trip is our most popular watersports trip length, and seems to be that "just right" amount of time for fun on the water without overdoing it, for "most groups."

We're glad to schedule longer trips if you We do offer a variety of programs from 1 hour to 2½ hours or more, and we're glad to customize any adventure, even if you'd like to spend the better part of the day on the water.
Live Oac watersports charters can accommodate up to 6 passengers per boat, and you’ll want to make sure you choose the right duration of trip to make sure everyone who wants to participate in watersports has enough time. Please CALL or TEXT US (843-384-1414) if you have any questions about timing or a personalized recommendation for your group. Our captains handle our phone calls, and will provide an experienced recommendation. Here are some ideas on how much time you might need:

Our two most popular watersports trips are the 1½ Hour and 2½ Hour charters. Read on to find out why. We do offer custom trip durations from 1 hour up to half day and longer custom programs.

Our main watersports activity area is about 10-15 minutes from the dock. This is super important in understanding the value of our trips and what length charter is a best fit for your group.

Our #1 watersports outing is the 1½ Hour charter. It’s a tremendous value, and a good fit for a Tubing-only trip or a Board 'N Tube™ charter. It's a great match for a group that just wants to tube, or where a couple of guests want to try ZUP™ Boarding. Our captains describe ZUP™ Boarding as a "get it right the first time" type of activity. It avoids the additional time of sizing equipment and getting "set up" in the water for what are usually multiple attempts to get up on waterskis or a wakeboard. The ZUP Board flattens the learning curve so that everyone "gets Zup".

For the more Advanced Watersports activities of waterskiing and wakeboarding, you'll need to factor in more time per person, roughly ~30 minutes of activity time for each person if it's a first time either wakeboarding or waterskiing. These two activities typically take many attempts for success on a first time outing. Experienced skiers and boarders can adjust accordingly. In the case of a group with multiple people wanting to participate in Advanced Watersports, we recommend usually a 2½ Hour watersports charter. This essentially doubles your activity time in the watersports area over the 1½ Hour version.

"What about 3 hour trips like your competitors? Or 4 or 5 hours…" — YES, we do offer longer charters of 3 or more hours, but please consider all of the following:
    • Our watersports area is not far from our departure dock. Our 2½ Hour trip gives you about 2 hours in the watersports area, maybe a bit more. If you had to ride 30+ minutes each way on a "3 hour" trip, it would be comparable, right? We want to offer the best value and a fair comparison.
    • We've found that our 2½ Hour watersports charter is described by most guests as "just right". It's the 'goldilocks' zone of having plenty of time for fun and not so much that you absolutely wear yourself out. Waterskiing and Wakeboarding are physically demanding activities and you don't want to push yourself too far on a single outing.
    • "But we're different…" — OK! We understand that every group is unique. Give us a heads up and if you really want a 3+ hour trip we are glad to provide. Especially if you're just looking to spend more of the day on the water and want to intersperse activities with cruising around, etc. Our recommendations above are based on continuous watersports action and that might not be a good match for everyone. Perhaps you want a relaxed half-day or more on the water and not feel rushed to move through activities. We can slow down the pace, cruise the backcountry and have fun. We can even get more creative with a visit to a remote beach or other island destination. Call or Text us (843-384-1414) for specialized assistance on a longer excursion, as they aren't often shown on our reservations site for booking.

  •   ALL AGES
This trip is available for All Ages.

While guests on board may be of all ages, participants in actual watersports activities must be capable swimmers.

On watersports charters, in ALL cases, minors (age 17 and under) must be accompanied by an adult who is a parent or legal guardian, age 18+.
  •   BACKCOUNTRY
The Backcountry includes the inshore waterways like tidal creeks, marshes, rivers & sounds. These are typically calmer water excursions, where you don't have to worry about your "sea legs". Crossing the Hilton Head Bridge from the mainland gives a great view of some of the backcountry waters we explore.

Of special note on watersports charters is our PROXIMITY to excellent areas for activities:

    Location Matters

A highlight of Watersports with Live Oac is our prime location. We are 10-15 minutes from superb ski & wakeboard locations in the quiet creeks of Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. Our proximity to this area means you'll spend more time Skiing, Boarding, and Tubing and less time just "getting there and back."

The tree-lined creeks mean you'll have the best opportunity for calm water comfortable skiing. The trees provide excellent protection from Lowcountry winds and waves, so the water is perfect for all levels of watersports.

Due to the out-of-the-way nature of this special spot, you will experience significantly less boat traffic than the busier locations on Hilton Head, like Broad Creek or Harbour Town and Calibogue Sound. We prefer the quiet waters of the wildlife refuge and think you will too.

Compare to other departure locations on Broad Creek (Shelter Cove Marina or Palmetto Bay Marina), South Beach Marina or Harbour Town, and you'll see why Live Oac is the number one choice for towable watersports in the Lowcountry! Why spend half your trip just "getting there and back" when you could be having fun water skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing?
